James Wanless Ph.D.

Life Navigator & Mentor

I am so much more sensitive and emotional than ever before. I wonder what’s going on.  Am I becoming a woman who feels and follows feelings?  But I’m a guy, I’m a Taurus. Maybe it’s because I’m having some dreaded prostate issues. I was heartened, however, by a passage in a book titled “The Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers,” by my now deceased great friend, Ralph Blum of  Runes fame, in which he writes:  “If you’re  over 70 and don’t have some prostate cancer, you’re probably a woman.” Right on Ralph! Yes, I am man, a real man!

Nevertheless, my doctor prescribed some tiny little pills that are testosterone blockers. Testosterone is a driving force for prostate problems. Since taking these, I have cried, I have screamed, I have gotten supremely pissed of, deeply loving, very anxious (and not just because of Trump’s gross ignorance and delusional, duplicitous ego).  Every feeling has become magnified.

As an optimist and opportunist because I follow the wisdom of the “Fortune Maker” archetype in Voyager, I am finding this a wondrous journey into the emotions associated with the feminine.  I see now why women are the feelers and empaths, the tarot readers and therapists.  Maybe women’s intuition is a physical product of the female brain mixed with estrogen?  Read “The Female Brain” by Louann Brizendine for more understanding about this.

On the other hand, perhaps my growing emotionality has nothing to do with hormones and is just a result of my calamitous situation of being wanless, car-less, and almost moneyless and homeless.  Remember one of the greatest “rules of life” – “Everything is connected to everything.”  Is it any wonder that as I lose my man-force, I am losing just about everything else?

Parenthetically, in my “U.S. Presidential campaign of 1992″ running on the platform of Tarot for All, Archetypes as Advisors, and April Fools Day as National Holiday, I stated “Wan(t) Less, Get More!” So now I’m feeling that pledge.  And btw, instead of “Tarot,” we got candidate “Perot.”  It was close, too close.

But let’s not forget this “rule of life” – “Everything, every moment, every event, every person no matter how smarmy, every every” is all energy!” – thus, supremely useful as a resource for the most imperative skill of the 21st century – to be “renew-able.”  As I say about doing the Cards, “less is more.”  Everything we own, owns us. So, “losing it all is actually gaining more” – more lightness, freedom, autonomy, purpose, and more mobility for renewal and regeneration.

Life is a learning process and so my new adventure is all about personal growth and evolution. I once remember taking some psilocybin (a mushroom psychedelic compound) back in the day and had 24 hours of total paranoia, and can now absolutely understand the trauma and insanity of those having such mental issues. It was terrifying and terrific!  As they say, “if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger” and certainly more aware.

My own spiritual path of “ever-renewing aliveness” is being tested now. Taking my own mind-medicine, I turn my worry into presence and preparation and my anger into passion and purpose.  I do the “Magician’s magic manifestation” ritual: I see myself in gold light being completely healthy and more expansively integrated and whole. I recall my motivation for wanting to live and really live, fully alive!. I believe in myself and affirm that I can and am revitalizing and resurrecting myself. I am “doing the do,” like going out to get a small, light affordable car. Doing so,  I expect all good things to happen.  As a result, I am already feeling more alive now with even more gusto  – the aliveness of a turned on mind, pumping heart, robust body, and inspired spirit. And of course, I am becoming more integrated by uniting my yin and yang.  Maybe it’s a “sign” that for the first time ever I saw a sign on a bathroom door recently that said “gender neutral.”  How about being “gender whole” – healed, healthy, and happy.

I love you prostate. You have awakened me.  I am grateful and not dead!  For some of you who might get this…Where’s Jerry?  There’s “fire on the mountain!” Cockadoodledo!  Get my “Exceptional Rooster Cards and Story” and get fired up!  www.james-wanless.com

Just having read a neuroscience study about “superaging, count me in. I can still remember names and write articles. So far, so good. But what do the neuroscientists say are the activities that keep us mentally nimble like a 25 year old?  And is that it?  Is “superaging” only about playing bridge at 85 or just warding off dementia?

I like what the neuroscientists say though.  They espouse the old “work ethos,” but this time it’s working on yourself. It follows the universal eco-principle of “use it or lose it.”

To stay mentally fit, it’s not playing Sudoku (unless you want to be good at Sudoku). It’s about pushing your thinking mind. Neuroscience is on the right path, but from my experience of working at being a “superager,” it’s using your “whole brain.” This includes applying the mental faculties of creative and analytical thinking, picturing the past while imagining the future, and exercising the intuitive and emotional parts of our intelligence.

As part of mental fitness, sustain your “EQ,” which in addition to being mindful of emotions, it’s “emotional fitness.”  For a real energizer workout, express your feelings with gusto the way a bird cries an alarm or chirps a love ballad.  It’s a “sonic tonic.”  Do your “CQ,” which is the intelligence of actively following your curiosity.  And be “intuactive” – spontaneously act on intuitive impulses which are located in the emotional part of your forebrain.  This all means not to get sedated with the same old thinking and way of thinking. Grow your brain, which in fact occurs when your work it out holistically by as much sounding as thinking, and feeling your way along as much as logic would have it.

The super secret of “superaging” is to not be sedated by a sedentary lifestyle.  Neuroscientists have come to the conclusion that to keep the mind alert and attentive, you must move the body.  Even psychologists recognize that “sedentary behavior disorder” is a pathology.  A workout a day keeps the shrink away.  But what kind of workout?  Actually, the “fountain of youth” is right under your nose. It’s conscious breathing in harmony with physical movement.  Study after study has declared that aerobic workouts with intentional heavy and rapid breath make you creative, more intelligent, and a quick learner. Just going for a walk, but walking fast and breathing hard, is the single greatest habit and practice to follow.  Your brain gets younger because it grows new brain cells and it has changed my life.

Don’t be one of those 50% who join a gym but then don’t go. The best to keep working out is to get the endorphin hormones to kick in. Exercising hard gives you the “feel good” sensation gives you a healthy and natural opioid craving for it’s ecstatic high!

The “superager” grows young mentally, emotionally, physically.  It takes “attitude” for sustaining youthfulness by working out your whole self!  It seems like work and it is, but the key to this entire path is motivation!  This to me means “inspiration” – in-spirited and infused with the life force, which is inherent within us to keep growing to fulfill our life purpose and potential to be all that we can be. All of nature, except for us humans, do their very best to be who they are.  We however, get complacent and conflicted. As I say, it’s “death by comfort.” so get going to work on yourself to do your “lifework” and harvest yourself, ike all of nature, to become more resourceful, richer, and sustainable.  Become better with age into a sage. This takes a “breakout” from the concept of retired life into a state of “refirement.”

To get energized and re-energized to live the full life, turn on the power of your mind.  Exercise your imagination to picture your healthy, enlivened self years in your future. Feel it in your heart and throughout your body. Believe and affirm this in your thoughts. Take action. This has been my superager “wholistic” formula – see it, feel it, believe it, do it, expect it.  It’s the magic elixir.

Remember, not only are we our thoughts, our feelings, our actions, we are the people we live and socialize with. To stay young of heart and spirit, body, and mind develop a circle of fellow life-enthusiasts, seekers, explorers, creatives.

Balance.  endorphins

Growing young.

There’s alot to agree with in this study and

I am doing what the article says and more. According to the latest studies of our brain, it shows that by certain activities, we actually grow more neurons, which leads to a longer “wellthy” life.

At 74, it’s so far so good.

It’s getting fit for life, work out your brain and body. Use it or lose it.

Because I am more creative, more motivated, more mobile, more purposeful, more profitable, more passionate than ever before.

Conscientious stanford study

WHY CARDS? See the Voyager Signature Reading: The Whole Self Mandala

I made the multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-use VOYAGER TAROT to create a 21st century “map of life,” a true “gps of the soul” for navigating our changing world and for creating our own fortunes.

I use the Cards “face-up” to give me inspiration and counsel for successfully completing my endeavors, and I pick cards “face-down” to break me free of my habitual assumptions and projections. It’s a wondrous whole-brain tool for new insight and innovative thinking.  I call this process “fortune creation,” an evolution far beyond fortune-telling prediction fiction.

Voyager Cards are all nuggets of information that are holistically organized in an archetypal way that nudges the psyche in a deep, positive and grounded way. The surprise, the synchronicity, and the visual symbols collaged into a dreamlike landscape pique our curious intuition, which is the x-factor for evoking brilliance.

The most amazing corporate event I’ve ever had with the Cards was an afternoon with Oracle, Inc. Their accountants went creatively bonkers loving the play of possibilities as a team-building exercise by interacting intuitively and mythically as they chose Cards for the “Hero’s Journey” process I gave them.

The “Whole Self Mandala” in my short video presentation is a way of reading the cards to determine the state of our wholeness, healthiness and synergy of mind, heart, body and spirit; and to reflect upon the condition of our finances, work, home and love life.

This ten-card layout is a perfect mandala for assessing and manifesting our visions and dreams for this coming year, which in 2016 is the “Year of Harvest.”

In the short video, I actually picked a couple of cards facedown from the Mandala layout and they were Nine of Crystals “Narrowness” and the Ten Card “Fortune.  Both of these Cards are “perfect” because my message in this number nine “Year of Harvest” is stay focused and go the whole nine years (Narrowness) and take the entrepreneurial risk of breaking out and taking a chance (Fortune). “Why We do Cards ” is because we learn to trust the mystery of synchronicity and embrace uncertainty and the wisdom of letting go of control.  In this world today of continuous change, those are the right and necessary qualities to have.

COMPLETE IT! (And Feel Complete) 2016 “Year of Harvest”

Everything is information and energy. I pay attention to what I see, hear and read that moves me. When I realized that 2016 is the Year of Harvest, I was motivated and galvanized.  It’s  harvest time because 2016 adds up to 9, which is a perfect, whole number that is the end of all single digit numbers, hence a number of completion.  Just because of that, however, does not automatically mean that this is the year for realizing goals with some kind of payoff.  Prophecies are fulfilled by ourselves, not by some number. But the meaning of this number nine year felt right to me.  It is my time to harvest all the work I have put into working on myself and in my profession.

Number nine, however, has a deeper meaning for all of us.  It’s important to take note that as a culture, we have a tendency to not finish and not fulfill.  In our time of speeding and expanding media and consumer barrage, we get easily distracted by another new and different shiny object, or an alert on my phone, or because things take too long, or I lose belief, or, or… We have so many excuses for not completing what we start.  And it’s not healthy psychologically.  We are born of nature and everything in nature strives to complete its business except we humans because our world of artifice and technology has disconnected us from the natural cycle of starting, maintaining, and finishing. Losing our own nature leads to all kinds of pathologies. Think of this time as an opportunity to reconnect with your true self and be healed by getting it done.

Go the “whole nine yards” and you will feel more whole. It’s not about trying to be perfect. It’s about completing things to be a more complete person. Whether your castle is only made of sand makes no difference. Just finish what you started, and feel good about yourself and life.  The sense of completion is a very real sense.  Respect it, relish it and be healed.      sand
